The French Laundry

We ate dinner at The French Laundry the first Sunday of our Honey moon. It was the first night, really. I will never eat another meal that good in my entire life, and neither will you.

It took 4:20, and was somewhere between 9 and 75 courses. Probably somewhere closer to 15, but we really lost count. Not only was the food incredible, but the service and small touches were unbelievable. We had butter from California and Vermont, and salt that was 40 million years old. And two other kinds of salt. And choice of five kinds of bread. Seriously, it didn't end.

The food courses went roughly like this: oysters and caviar, salad/foie gras, sushi/tuna, lobster, chicken, steak, sorbet, dessert, more dessert. Lots of wine too.

When we left they gave us a copy of the menu for the night, some cookies, and some chocolates. And a fancy copy of the bill, which was supposed to maybe make it easier to swallow. It kind of was, neither of us had even the slightest thought that it wasn't worth it.

I really could go on about it for a few hours, but I'll stop here for now.

Wedded

So it's been a busy few weeks, to say the least. Everything is slowly returning to routine, except for that now I'm sick. The wedding was fantastic, and it seemed like everyone had a pretty good time. With the exception of the small hurricane that swallowed Philadelphia that day, every went pretty much perfectly. There aren't a lot of pictures yet, but here are a couple.

If you happen to have any pictures, please send them to me. Maybe you'll even be lucky enough to grace this page.

Hopefully I'll recant some of the honeymoon highlights in the next few days.

Blackfish!

Last night was Kendra and my 4th 'anniversary', so we figured we should celebrate, since the clock is going to reset in two weeks. So down to Blackfish in Conshohocken we went. It's a BYOB stuffed into a row home sized place, which made it a little crowded and a little loud. That's just about where the negatives stop.

The food was some of the best stuff I've had anywhere, and definitely the best in Philadelphia. They were out of the appetizer I wanted, but managed to scrape together some of the boar salami anyway, which was nice of them. We also had a little smoked salmon with a deep fried egg and crispy potatoes. Both were delicious.

The main courses were bouillabaise, basically a fish soup with salmon, tuna, scallops, clams, mussels, and skate. Kendra had short ribs and scallops. Both were pretty amazing. Possibly the best part was a parsnip puree. I don't know what parnsips are or what they look like, but it tasted great.

Desert was fresh fruit with sabayon, again very good. It was a little pricey, but you'd be surprised how much money you usually waste on alcohol, so it wasn't all that bad.

Would I go back? Absolutely.

Twenty21

This is a bit delayed, but better late than never, eh? A few weeks ago was restaurant week in Philly, so we went down to Twenty21 in Philly. Overall impressions: not so great. The martini was good, they make them without vermouth without even asking. Perfect. It was pretty much all downhill from there. The appetizer was ok, mine was a terrine of squash, foie gras, and duck. Not really that great. Mostly just a mix of stuff that I don't like so much. I had prime rib for the main course, which was pretty good, but overall a little plain. Kendra has mushroom lasagna with a couple of kinds of rabbit. I thought it was really good, even if you only needed one bite before it was overwhelming. Last up, some apple tort. It probably wasn't any better than what you can get at Giant.

Would I go back? Not so much, at least not until I eat at a lot of other restaurants in town. Speaking of other restaurants, dinner tonight is at Blackfish in Conshohocken, and I'm pretty excited about it. It's a nice BYOB with a lot of hype. Hopefully it lives up to it.

MS150!

This past weekend was the MS150. It was a lot of phone fun, and really not as hard as I expected it to be. I was tired, that's for sure. And sore. And incredibly cold both mornings. But we finished, and it only took 10 hours of riding. Here's a picture or two, 'cause I know you want to look at me in spandex.

Bonus points for answering this question: What's on the Lockheed Martin jersey???
